Living Walls Without the Irrigation

A planted living wall needs a drip line, a drain and someone to replace what dies. An artificial living wall needs a wall. Here is how they compare and where the artificial version wins.

What a planted wall really costs

The install is the smaller number. A planted living wall needs irrigation, drainage, a waterproofed wall behind it, seasonal plant replacement and someone who checks it weekly. Indoors it needs grow lights. Most of the planted walls we are asked to replace failed within two years for one of those reasons.

What an artificial living wall needs

A wall, a fence or a frame, and zip ties. NatraHedge living wall panels mix ficus, ferns, grasses and flowering stems on the same interlocking grid as our hedge mats, so they go up the same way and weigh a fraction of a soil-backed system. No water, no drain, no plumbing.

Where it makes sense

  • Restaurant and hotel interiors where a fire rating is required and irrigation is not an option.
  • Retail and office lobbies that want green behind a reception desk without a maintenance contract.
  • Balconies and rooftops where weight and water are the constraints.
  • Event backdrops that go up in an hour and come down the same day.

Choosing a style

Kauai, Maui and Rainforest panels differ in how much flowering and how much fern they carry; the product pages show each one flat and installed. Plan the layout on the floor first so the taller foliage sits where you want it, then work top to bottom. See the living wall panels or read the install guide.
